about

SUKI016

That man, Craig McNamara AKA Last Magpie, is proving a popular choice round here at Hypercolour/Losing Suki HQ. With various EPs and remixes for both our labels, it’s also rubbed off on some of our artists too, with the likes of Maya Jane Coles being a big supporter (getting a Last Magpie re-rub of her ‘Everything’ track on her new label I/AM/ME). His always on point blend of genres, from bumpin’ garage kissed house to hardcore bass monsters mark him out as a very versatile producer, and on the ‘She Won’t Let’ EP, the Magpie once again spreads his wings over four cuts.

Title track, ‘She Won’t Let’ contains dark flavors within, the brooding bassline and clattering breakbeats jostle alongside the down tuned vocals and drum rolls, music for long dark tunnels with sweat soaked walls, the Magpie flexes his hardcore influences right here. ‘Chicken Shop’ is equally disjointed but no less funky, some freaky deaky monologue (from the chicken shop, obviously) and looped vox phrases ride over the bare bones back beat, booming b-line and distorted low end stabs for a proper unique track.

“Initial’ finds the Magpie immersed in modular synths, as the arps twist around a moody, skanking beat, like Carl Craig just showed up at a Massive Attack ‘Mezzanine’ recording session. Impressive stuff. And closing the EP, a re-rub of ‘Roots’, which first made its appearance on 2013’s Losing Suki ‘1995’ release, and was recently was used by move d on his most recent Fabric mix CD. McNamara revisits the track here and adds dollops of authentic 90’s early jungle/breakbeat vibes all over it for that true M25 experience!
